South Street

This family compound forms a retreat from the complexities of daily life and creates zones for recreation and quiet reflection. The site is a beautiful, wooded lot adjacent to a coastal preserve. The woods require minimal clearing to construct this 1,800 SF house and lawn, allowing the lot to be rewilded with native plants.

The enclosure is cantilevered above the base, raised above the flood plain for safety and to enhance living spaces at the treetop level. Outdoor living is carved into the center of the building at both levels and connected with a stair. The house has large windows to link occupants to the surrounding pine savannah landscape. The roof slopes to south for solar orientation with generous overhangs for shading. The grade level is devoted to entertainment with an outdoor kitchen, storage for recreational equipment, and screened porch for watching sports and grilling.
