Houston Disaster Recovery 2

residential

In 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall on the upper Texas coast, causing more than $3 billion in damage to single-family housing across Houston.  Three architects created a collaborative relationship between the city, residents, and local designers to support 275 families in their return home.

Acknowledgement of the neighborhood context and culture was embedded in the design process, which began with workshops to establish the context and vernacular. Small groups of residents reviewed the initial schematic designs, providing essential input  to refine the designs. The results were exhibited in a Gallery Show where residents selected their preferred designs for development into Construction Documents. Individual applicants then selected their preferred design from the Home Design Catalog, and the architects customized it to fit their needs and site.
