Eco-residence

residential

The house was designed to demonstrate environmental principles, but five weeks after completion it survived Category 3 hurricane conditions and over seven feet of tidal surge from Hurricane Katrina, demonstrating resilient design due to its hurricane strapping, exposed plywood shear walls, and a grass roof which effectively anchored the house against wind and water.

A small solar power system provides electricity and emergency power storage, with excess supplying the grid. Minimizing redundancy and transportation of construction materials, the structure utilizes local, recycled and reclaimed materials with high-efficiency glazing, appliances, and air conditioning equipment. A green roof planted with native plants creates a cool, permeable roof area with high insulation value.
