black and white beach house

residential

This house subverts the white-columned Southern house with its wrap-around porch by twisting the enclosure beneath the symmetrical roof to create spatial variety. The main house is set back to allow the 400 year-old oak tree to remain untouched, and a plinth raises the house above the flood zone, creating clear sightlines to the beach.

The family compound changes in scale and materials toward the rear of the property. Simple volumes are clad in shou-sugi-ban, charred accoya wood. The material change sets up a strict dichotomy between a traditional main house and a contemporary set of accessory buildings which include a dwelling unit for extended family and a garage with gymnasium above. The terraced garden creates a central space that ties the buildings together.
