rebuild by design
master planning
The Rebuild by Design competition explored natural and fortified solutions to improve resilience in the places most at risk of severe storms. The unabridged team worked in Bridgeport, CT, a densely-populated and environmentally-compromised city on the Long Island Sound which received 10’ of storm surge, effectively isolating the South End from access to medical assistance, food, or other services for days. The team designed solutions with an integrated approach to living and working along the water’s edge to restore the environment, strengthen connections, enhance the regional economy, reduce long-term risk, and restore waterways as the primary locus of identity. The design received $75M in funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
